In concert with Northshire Bookstore, Yaddo is pleased to present Sigrid Nunez, whose new novel The Friendoffers an unsentimental portrayal of loss, the human-canine bond, and the healing power of literature.
In The Friend, a writing professor loses her best friend to suicide and subsequently adopts his orphaned Great Dane. A self-described cat person, the narrator accepts the 180-pound dog in spite of her rent-stabilized lease, which prohibits the animal. Together, they grapple with overwhelming grief for the man who anchored their lives, and form the kind of bond Rilke once described as love: “two solitudes that protect and border and greet each other.” Kirkus Reviews calls The Friend “breathtaking in both pain and in beauty; a singular book.” Poet and fellow Yaddo artist Jay Rogoff will host a discussion with Nunez, who has published several novels, including A Feather on the Breath of God, For Rouenna, and The Last of Her Kind, as well as a nonfiction account of time spent with her singular mentor: Sempre Susan: A Memoir of Susan Sontag. Please join us at Northshire Bookstore to celebrate publication of The Friend.
